Annie Leibovitz. Príncipe de Asturias 2013 Award

Annie Leibovitz, an American photographer, was the first woman to exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC and the last to portray the musician John Lennon just hours before he was murdered. And now she has been awarded with the Príncipe de Asturias Award of Communication and Humanities.

She works for several magazines like Vanity, Fair, Rolling Stone and Vogue and she is the world’s highest paid photographer. She is the most requested freelance photographer in the world and has been able to photograph the most important personalities of the current history. She has received many awards throughout her career, and in 2005, the American Photo magazine designated her as the most influential photographer of all time.

Before photography, she cultivated writing and music. At the age of 20 she was already an accomplished photographer and when she returned to the U.S. she was hired by Rolling Stone. She traveled with her father, who was a lieutenant colonel.

She has also worked in sports themes like the World Cup Soccer in Mexico (she was the first photographer to be entrusted the task of making the posters) or the Summer Olympics at Atlanta.

But she mainly made portraits, where she represented the more intimate side of those photographed; she was able to show their less known side.

Queen Elizabeth II of United Kingdom entrusted Leibovitz to take the official photographs of her visit to Virginia.

He has also worked for Walt Disney, where she took a series of photographs of celebrities playing different characters of their films.

She photographed the model Gisele Bündchen and the basketball player LeBron James for the cover of Vogue magazine. The photography was criticized for containing racial connotations, since people said LeBron’s pose reminded King Kong and the model to the blonde girl who captivated the gorilla.

At the beginning, she never clarified publicly the nature of her relationship with the novelist and essayist Susan Sontag, who died in 2004 and who she met when she photographed her for her jacket’s book. Even so, when Annie was interviewed for her book she confessed: “With Susan was a love story,” and in her preface she gives details about her romantic-intellectual relationship with Sontag, who pressured her to work harder and be more profound and personal in her works. Later she has referred to her as her lover Susan. She has three daughters, gestated by a surrogate mother.

Even though, this is just a small part of her job. She is one of the most important photographers of the moment, so her work is really difficult to show in just some space. So that, I leave you here some links where you can get a wider idea of her work:
